Wolves overcome a Dire suspension

Wolves overcome a Dire suspension

Dire Wolves recover from slow start to take first victory at Worlds 2018 Play-in

The OPL’s Dire Wolves pulled out a 34-minute victory over LAN’s Infinity Esports despite some setbacks in the early game. DW’s Academy jungler UDYSOF had some big shoes to fill with starting jungler Shernfire out due to suspension.

Despite the low expectations for the Wolves, the Azir and Tristana scaling was able to mask the early game mistakes made by their Academy jungler, with Triple’s play in the mid lane securing Player of the Game for himself, and an early win for his team.

DW drafted a strong teamfighting comp with their fresh jungler picking up Xin Zhao to hopefully apply some early pressure to the enemy lanes. Unfortunately he struggled against his opposite number SolidSnake’s Skarner, barely escaping with his life in the river early on and suffering an early death from an easy countergank.

The early game was all Infinity, the Latin America champions picking up First Blood kills and leading in farm handily, leaving many wondering if Dire Wolves would roll over and die without their MVP jungler.

It all turned around at the 15 minute mark, Infinity’s mid laner Cotopaco attempted to place his Rift Herald at the DW turret through a Ryze Realm Warp, but an incredible ultimate from DW Triple’s Azir pushed Ryze out and the rest of the OPL side collapsed, securing their first kill.

Over the next 5 minutes Dire Wolves clawed their way back to even gold with a few stray kills, but it was at the 24 minute mark where they turned the tide.

In a fight for a Mountain Drake, Solidsnake’s Skarner was caught unaware from an Alistar flank, the ensuing engage resulting in a 2-0 on kills and the drake. With the enemy jungler down, DW turned their sights to Baron, with the rookie UDYSOF securing the objective at the cost of his life.

The scaling of DW’s Azir and Tristana had finally turned on, and they converted that into a 3 turret lead and an inhibitor for a 3k gold Baron power play.

With a 5k gold deficit at the 33 minute mark and Dire Wolves bearing down on a second Baron, Infinity Esports made a desperation challenge, which unfortunately lost them 4 members, and their nexus.

Dire Wolves go to 1-0, but face the goliath of EDG later in the day, while Infinity drop to 0-2 so far in the play-ins.
